As part of the Global University Alliance (Microgravity Research), and following the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the University of Porto and Axiom Space, Peggy Whitson and Emiliano Ventura, .
This partnership arose from the submission of an Exploratory Project last March, coordinated by researcher Eliana Santiago on behalf of ID+ U.Porto and researcher José Pedro Sousa on behalf of CENP.
Under the theme ‘Zero Gravity, Infinite Possibilities’, the strategic meeting included presentations by Axiom and ID+, as well as an informal session to explore opportunities for further collaboration in areas of R&D where the two organisations’ work might intersect.
In addition to Eliana Santiago, ID+ was represented by Cláudia Lima, Heitor Alvelos, Lígia Lopes and Susana Barreto.

Peggy Annette Whitson is an American biochemist and astronaut working for Axiom Space. She retired from NASA in 2018, having served as the 13th Chief of the Astronaut Office. Across all her missions, Whitson has spent a total of 695 days in space, more than any other American or woman.

Emiliano Ventura, from Portugal, is the first participant in the pioneering Project Astronaut, a pilot programme for astronaut training. The physiologist has been responsible for the physical preparation of the crew on recent missions to the International Space Station and will now take part in a project involving a rigorous six-month astronaut training programme, with the aim of joining a space mission.
