Women and Girls in Science at IPCA

ID+ took part in the roundtable “Science for All”, represented by our collaborator and PhD candidate, Gabriela Sá, held as part of the celebrations of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, organised by the Polytechnic of Cávado and Ave (IPCA), in Barcelos.

ID+’s participation highlighted Design as a scientific field and interdisciplinary practice, emphasising the contribution of women to the development of methodologies, projects and research processes with social, cultural and environmental impact. Through the sharing of academic and professional journeys, students were introduced to diverse trajectories of women in Science, demonstrating how Design is established as a strategic field for research and innovation.

Held on the IPCA campus, the session fostered an atmosphere of openness and reflection, encouraging direct engagement between researchers and students. The central moment was the roundtable, which brought together representatives from IPCA’s research centres — 2Ai, ID+, CICF and UNIAG — in an open dialogue about professional pathways, challenges and opportunities, moderated by Patrícia Gomes, Director of CICF.

Drawing on personal experiences and research outcomes, the discussion addressed issues such as the underrepresentation of women across several scientific fields, the need to assert competencies in contexts still marked by inequality, and the importance of creating positive role models for younger generations. The debate reinforced the importance of giving visibility to the trajectories of women and girls in Science, inspiring vocations and promoting greater diversity within the scientific landscape.

The initiative also included an exhibition at the José Mariano Gago Library dedicated to women who have distinguished themselves in science, as well as Play Science, an interactive quiz organised by IPCA’s Office for the Promotion of Pedagogical Innovation and Academic Success, which challenged participants to learn in a dynamic and participatory way.

In a context where women remain globally underrepresented in science, this initiative highlighted the commitment of IPCA and its research centres, including ID+, to fostering a more inclusive, collaborative and socially relevant scientific environment.
