The University of Aveiro is part of the recently approved Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programme Response_Able Futures (in Design and Health_Care)

Response_Able Futures is a two-year Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s in Design and Health_Care, which has been approved by the European Commission. The programme is a joint initiative of LUCA School of Arts (Belgium), the University of Aveiro (Portugal), and Sheffield Hallam University (United Kingdom). At the University of Aveiro, the Response_Able Futures programme integrates the Master’s in Design.

The programme aims to educate students to develop solutions that contribute to innovation in health and care, with a social and economic impact – through the creation of new products; the design of health and care literacy materials; communication interfaces between services, health and care staff, and users; or the recommendation of policies that contribute to the humanization of health and care spaces.

Response_Able Futures has a unique mobility scheme, which places students in Belgium, Portugal and the UK, offering an insight into different cultures of care and health systems. The curriculum is enriched by master classes, workshops, and projects, and through industry partnerships, peer collaboration, and engagement with a global network of experts, the program fosters meaningful connections and promotes knowledge exchange. Students will be trained to understand the needs of users within broader contexts, working collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and adopting an integrated design approach that develops theirresearch and project skills. Central to its mission is also the alignment of students’ personal aspirations with a commitment to inclusive and responsible health_care design.

Professor Joana Quental, the project coordinator at UA, describes the programme as “a truly unique international experience, offering students the chance to work in multidisciplinary teams, engage with real-world projects across three universities, and explore diverse approaches to design education and practice.”

Applications for the September 2025 intake will open on December 2nd, 2024
