Hands-on Design Research Seminar, 26 SEP 2025

Today, design means much more than designing products or communication media. However, ‘there remains a widespread idea that design still focuses on the superficial appearance of objects’ (in: Meyer & Norman, 2020, Future of Design Education). Considering the radical transformations that have influenced design practices and approaches in the current global context, which are increasingly comprehensive, diverse and inter/multi-disciplinary, this initiative will feature design researchers who, in addition to their work in the field of design, carry out research activities focused on complex social and contextual dynamics. In the seminar ‘Hands-on Design Research’, through the presentation of concrete cases and completed projects, participants will be invited to discuss fundamental concepts for a broader understanding of current design practices and research, with the aim of deepening what it means to be a designer today and what role research plays in this field. The seminar programme consists of two parts. The morning session will be dedicated to a guided tour by the curator of the exhibition ‘Terra Inesgotável’ (Inexhaustible Earth), followed by a debate on topics related to design practice and research. The afternoon session will feature guided tours of the Footwear Museum, the Hat Museum, and the Oliva Art Centre, where the topics discussed in the morning session will be explored in greater depth.
