Biomechanical analysis of female head trauma

The biomechanics of traumatic injuries of different parts of the human body, as a consequence of road crashes, falling, contact sports, and military environments have been studied for decades. In particular, traumatic brain injury (TBI), the so-called “silent epidemic”, contributes to worldwide death and disability more than any other traumatic insult (circa 69 million individuals yearly, Dewan et al. 2019), justifying the relevance of this research topic. Despite its great importance, the vast majority of studies in the field do not take into account the sex aspect regarding the morphology and physiology of women, which indeed differs from men (Gupte et al, 2019) and may result in a distinctive outcome for a given traumatic event. Sex also plays a role in the various conditions that precede an accident (ergonomics, psychology, etc.), not forgetting also other issues, such as endocrinology that affect the recovery of the female brain compared to the male one.
